Instagram research without mixing jars

Public research without mixing jars. No scraper code. Keep competitor looking in a cold room so brand cookies never sit on the same tab. Authorized work only.

Instagram research without mixing jars 1

I look at public Instagram pages in a profile that has never held a brand login. That is the whole method. No scraper. No export of someone else's followers. No mixing the research tab with Business Suite cookies.

One thing worth flagging: a headed browser is still a browser. If Instagram shows the page to a logged-out visitor, I can open it. If the page requires a login I do not have, I stop. This is not a collection guide.

Why a separate profile

Brand cookies are expensive. They hold inbox, ads, and publisher state. Research history is cheap and noisy. I do not want competitor grids, saved posts, and random explore junk sitting next to the brand session.

Multiple accounts on one PC is the parent split. Instagram cookies and session hygiene is for sessions you already created. This page is the empty profile those two assume for looking.

MaskWright 0.1: one user-data-dir per profile, Windows 10/11, no cloud sync. profiles.json is encrypted. The Chromium directory is not. Cookie import files are plaintext. I do not import anything into research.

What counts as research here

Public profiles. Public posts. Public ads you can already see in official libraries. Notes I type into a document I own.

Not: unofficial exporters, follower dumps, inbox scrapes, or a script that pages through a grid faster than a person. Instagram scheduling without unofficial helpers is the sibling refusal for tools that want the session. Research tools that want the session get the same no.

If I need to log in to see something, I use an account I am allowed to use, and I still keep that login out of the brand Suite profile. Usually I stay logged out.

How I set the research profile

Empty cookies. Chromium core I will keep using. Locale that matches the market I am looking at, or the household if I am not attaching a proxy. No brand extensions. No shipping addons. No pixel helpers.

I do not paste a mobile user agent onto this desktop profile. TikTok web versus the app is the same warning on another product: web is not the phone app. Instagram web is not the Instagram app. Instagram and shared device signals still exist on one Windows PC.

If the desk already uses a proxy for public looking, I attach HTTP or SOCKS5 I already pay for. MaskWright does not bundle exits. I do not attach the brand's ads exit to research "because it is already in the form."

Keep Suite and ads elsewhere

Meta Business Suite isolation is the control plane. TikTok Ads Manager isolation is the same idea on TikTok. Research does not open those UIs.

If I screenshot a public ad, the screenshot lives in an ops folder, not in the brand profile's download tray. Chrome saves into the profile directory unless I change it. That is how a "quick look" becomes a mixed folder.

What I will not document

I will not paste selectors. I will not paste a Python loop. I will not document how to hide a collector. If the site forbade automated collection, a headed window is not a costume for the same job.

TikTok device checks are a different surface. TikTok device checks we can see is that note. I do not treat a desktop profile as a phone.

FAQ

Can I use the brand account to look at competitors?

You can. I do not. The brand account then carries that history, those follows, and those ads you clicked. A logged-out research profile is cheaper to throw away.

Do I need to stay logged out?

For public pages, yes when the page allows it. If a checkpoint appears, I do not invent a throwaway login to bypass it. I stop or I use an account I am allowed to use, still not the brand Suite profile.

Is this the same as Incognito?

Incognito is one process with a temporary store. Close it and the cookies may go. The everyday profile still sits underneath. A dedicated MaskWright profile is a folder you can keep empty on purpose, with its own proxy field if you use one.

Can I clone the brand profile and delete cookies?

Deleting cookies from a copy is easy to get wrong. I create a new empty profile instead. Less chance a leftover IndexedDB row survives.

Look at what Instagram already shows the public. Keep that looking out of the brand folder. Write notes in a document you own.

More notes sit under Social media. Download MaskWright if you want a local empty profile for that job.
